Private Lessons  

Private lessons will primarily be scheduled outside of our shop hours OR at the discretion of the instructor.
​Call or email the shop to discuss and reserve a lesson time -  518-861-0038 /  info@spinningroom.net.  

The cost for a 1 hour lesson is $25.
The cost for a 1/2 hour lesson is $15.


Classes

Call the store (518-861-0038) to get more info or to sign up. We ask for payment prior to class to secure your spot. Most classes require a minimum of 3 students. If we do not have enough students sign up, we will refund your class fee or reschedule the class. In the event of class cancellation by The Spinning Room (due to snow or tsunami, etc.) your fee will be refunded. Some classes require a bit of "homework" beforehand, so make sure to check before coming to class. All participants need to have their materials purchased before arriving for class. More details will be given upon registration. As always, you enjoy a 10% discount on materials for all classes.

March Classes


Woven V Cowl (Hero Cowl pattern)                                    Date  changed

This woven cowl is completely created on the Rigid Heddle Loom, no need to stitch it together by hand. Students will be able to either weave the Plaid or Houndstooth design. The shop has looms that can be rented for $20. This IS NOT an introductory class! 

MATERIALS: 
Yarn: 200 grams of yarn total either DK or worsted (if doing houndstooth, 100 grams each in 2 different colors). The  shop samples were done in DK yarn. 
Loom: Rigid Heddle at least 10” wide. For worsted use an 8 dent reed, for DK use a 10 dent reed 
Other tools:  shuttles, blue removable painters tape, dowel rod to fit your loom (2nd class), slay hook, waste yarn for the header, scissors, notebook, 2 sheets 8 ½ X 11” paper, Tunisian crochet hook (optional), 2 hair ties, pen/pencil


HOMEWORK: Gather materials before coming to class. Pattern draft and links will be handed out at the 1st class.  
                
SKILL LEVEL: 
Students must have experience weaving on a rigid heddle loom.

Beginning Crochet 101

Are you wanting to learn to crochet? Come join Kathy for a 3-part workshop to learn the basics and start a project. After learning basic crochet stitches and crocheting in the round, you will be able to make a hat.

Building Blocks 2023

If you want to learn new knitting skills and stitches this Building Blocks class is the perfect way to achieve this. Join Kathy to make a crib size or larger blanket while learning a new skill with each block you knit. By next holiday season you will have a beautiful blanket to gift or keep it for yourself. The blanket can be made in one color or multiple colors, that is up to you. Sign up early as spaces fill quickly.​ 

MATERIALS: 
Pattern: T
he booklet Building Blocks by Michelle Hunter, it is available in the shop. The book is worth the cost with valuable videos, tips and tricks.
Yarn: You can use any weight yarn you prefer. The sample was made in worsted weight yarn. 
You will need 1 Skein (@200 yds) for each square in worsted weight yarn. (more if you use heavier yarn)
Needles: Size: US 7/16” or 8/16” or size indicated on the ball band if using a different weight yarn.
 
Misc. Tools:  scissors, stitch markers, paper, pencil.

HOMEWORK: 
Purchase the booklet Building Blocks by Michelle Hunter prior coming to class. 
                  
SKILL LEVEL: 
Suitable for Beginners who can already knit and purl and want to improve their skills. ​


Hat or Cowl, Beginner Brioche                         Another session will be scheduled in May

In this class you can decide if you want to knit a hat or rather a cowl in brioche. A cowl is easiest as there is no crown shaping involved. We’ll cover the tips and techniques for keeping your brioche rhythm intact, and avoid the inevitable errors that sometimes appear. Optional skills to learn are brioche shaping for increases and decreases.   

MATERIALS: 
Pattern: Clara (for hat) can be purchase thru the shop or on Ravelry. 
Winterflowers for the cowl is a free pattern on Ravelry.   
Yarn: Dk ( hat) or Worsted (cowl) weight yarn in 2 contrasting colors (one light colored). 
Needles: Size 5-7 16” or 20” circular needles or long DPN’s. If making the hat you will need DPN’s or equivalent to shape the crown. 
Misc. crochet hook, locking stitch marker.

HOMEWORK: Select yarn & based on size, cast on with dark color a  84stitches hat ( DK yarn)) +1  OR 84 stitches (cowl – worsted wt yarn) . Work first row in rib:  p1, k1 across, and leave last stitch unworked, ready to join in the round in class. 
Consult with Lisa if in doubt for needle & yarn weight to use, and finished size desired. She is in the shop on Thursdays or can discuss via phone or email if desired.  

                  
SKILL LEVEL: 
Students need to be comfortable knit & purl stitches in the round.

Building in Color

For those who know basic knitting stitches this class will build your skills in color knitting one panel at a time.  You will learn new skills and techniques while using multiple colors in a sequential way. We will cover intarsia, short rows, mosaic and more.

Yarn: Worsted weight yarn in 3 colors, 936 yds of each color. 
Needles: US #6/24” and US# 6/40” needles (you may use straight needles for all panels except #2). The border will need to be done with the 40” circular needle. 
Tools: scissors, stitch markers, paper, pencil.

HOMEWORK: 
Purchase the book Building in Color by Michelle Hunter (available at the shop) prior coming to class.  We will start together.

The Mechanics of Magic Loop,
A Hands-On Workshop

During the workshop, knitters will cast on and begin knitting a small circumference project of their choice and come away with an understanding of how Magic Loops works so they can confidently tackle any project, whether socks, mittens, children's items, closing the top of a hat or sweater sleeves. 

MATERIALS: 
Choose one pattern from the following sources:
- Socks, Safe Harbor by Amy Rapp, a free pattern. The shop sample was knitted in Periwinkle Sheep Watercolors on a US 1.5 (2.5mm) 32-inch needle or
-Legwarmers, a free pattern on Ravelry or
-Fingerless Gloves or Mittens, a free pattern from Tin Can Knits you can get on Ravelry.

Yarn: weight and yardage recommended for your pattern. 
Needles: 32” or 40” circular to work with your yarn. 
Tools: stitch markers, pencil and paper

HOMEWORK: Please get your pattern and yarn before coming to class.

                  
SKILL LEVEL: This workshop is appropriate for knitters who are brand new to Magic Loop, or those who want a refresher or improve their skills. 

Needle Felted Landscape                                                 This class is full

INSTRUCTOR:  Nancy McCaffrey               
FEE:  $40 + $10 mat fee to the teacher

Enjoy creating this beautiful, framed landscape by needle felting roving onto a flat wool sheet. In this class you will learn how to apply roving to flat wool, layering to achieve density of color and texture and how to combine roving to obtain elements of shading. All materials will be provided, and you will go home with your finished piece. Student will need to choose which scene they would like to do upon payment.  Materials Fee will be paid directly to the teacher.

MATERIALS: 
Materials Fee $10. Includes, roving, use of needle felting tools and pad, black or silver frame. Matting if wanted.

HOMEWORK: None
                
SKILL LEVEL: 
No previous experience needed.

Guernsey Wrap ​                                                                                      NEW DATES

Textured patterns found on traditional fishermen’s sweaters adorn this simple and practical stole, which by the way makes a great chair throw when not being used to wrap yourself into.  The knitting is straightforward, using only knits and purls. It is worked flat from end to end and will need blocking when finished. The wrap can be done in DK or Worsted weight yarn. An accessible pattern for the advanced beginner.

MATERIALS: 
Pattern: Guernsey Wrap by Jared Flood is available for purchase on Ravelry or through the shop; 
Yarn: 1160 yds. DK or 630 yds worsted; 
Needles: straight or 32” circular, size 6 for DK or size 8 for worsted. 
Tools: stitch markers, pencil and paper

SKILL LEVEL: This is a class for advanced beginner, students need to know how to knit and purl.

Introduction To Rigid Heddle Weaving

You always wanted to learn how to use a Rigid Heddle Loom!  This is the beginners class for you! We will cover how to warp a rigid heddle loom, basic weaving techniques, hem stitching, other finishing methods and at the end you will weave a scarf. 

MATERIALS: 
Yarn: You will need to bring two, 200 yd each, skeins of worsted weight yarn in a solid (no dark color). You may use 2 different colors. Encore yarn works well. The shop sample was made in Encore Hot Cakes yarn. 

Tools: paper, pencil, 12” ruler, scissors, a phone to take pictures is helpful
Rigid Heddle Loom: You can rent one from the shop or bring your own with an 8-dent reed.

HOMEWORK: Have your material ready before coming to class.
                  
SKILL LEVEL: No experience necessary.

Close To You Shawl/Scarf

Do you want to add a lighter shawl or scarf to your Spring wardrobe?  If so, this “Close To You Shawl” fits the bill. This simple but stylish shawl is knitted from one end with gradual increases to form a triangular shawl which is fun to knit and easy to wear. The zigzag border gives it a nice touch! While creating this lovely pattern you will sharpen your knitting skills.

MATERIALS: 
Pattern: Close To You 
by Justyna Lorowska (free on Ravelry);  
Yarn: 
418 yd fingering weight with long colorways (sample was made with Amitola) or a fingering yarn with a tonal coloration; 
Needles: 
Size #6 32” -40” circular needle;
Tools:

Sweater Workshop

Lisa will be here to lend advice, and support for the many aspects related to sweater construction and completion.

Typical sweater details involve: sizing (ease), matching pattern dimensions to your gauge or the other way!, colorwork, short rows,  shaping at underarm/shoulder, seaming, fixing mistakes without ripping  out entire (very long) rows, charts, brioche and more!
NOTE: If your problem is major OR Thursdays don’t work, you can still schedule a private lesson by appointment.

What Kind of Help: basic knit & crochet issues such as reading and understanding patterns, ripping out or picking up stitches, starting a new project, reading patterns, choosing yarn, casting on, binding off concerns.
