In Person Class with Margaret Radcliffe
FIBER TO FABRIC
How the underlying fiber informs the knitted fabric
and what you can do about it
Description: From dependable sheep’s wool to tricky rayon, every yarn is individual. Each type of fiber, from a specific breed of sheep or other fiber-bearing animal, from plants like bamboo, hemp and flax, manmade or remanufactured, brings its own distinct benefits and challenges to a knitting project. Learn to evaluate the potentials of your particular yarn and techniques for ensuring success in your hand knit garments. We will cover the roles of garment architecture, fit, and borders, ways to prevent sagging and biasing in inelastic fibers, and pattern stitches and seaming techniques to stabilize garments. Class will be a combination of lecture, hands-on work, and discussion. Students will take away an understanding of fiber characteristics, yarn behavior in knitted fabrics, and an arsenal of techniques for best results.
Who Should Attend: Knitters, Weavers, Spinners, Crocheters who are interested in learning how various yarns behave when they are knit and how that affects knitted garments.
Student Proficiency Level: Students should be comfortable casting on, binding off, working simple pattern stitches, increasing & decreasing, and picking up stitches for borders. Students will find this class most helpful if they have already finished several projects.

The Spinning Room is “kicking-off” a new charity event
Armed Forces Day May 21, 2022 We are calling all knitters, crocheter, weavers and sewers who want to contribute to a most worthwhile cause that will honor veterans. The Community Hospice (a local charity here) works with Stratton Veterans Hospital in Albany, N. Y. to ensure end of life care for all veterans. We can help by providing blankets of any size that are knit, crocheted, woven or sewn. Please consider making a blanket for a veteran (both men and women) in Hospice or Palliative care. Any color is fine, but there is a preference for red, white and blue. All blankets should be washable/dryable and please attach a card with your name and address so they can send you a personal thank you. This program runs all year long so bring finished blankets to the Spinning Room and Kathy will collect them and take them to our local office where they can be distributed to those in need of a little love and comfort. Let’s see what we can have by November 1, 2022 and another collection in the spring of 2023.Thanks for your help. For more information visit www.WEHonorVeterans.org or www.CommunityHospice.org. |
